The Lacuna Works started in the mid-2000s when Graham and Ben were looking for an inspiring and unusual name under which to run an emerging independent film production business. This was going well, but soon expanded to include all sorts of other creative and artistic ventures, such as photography, writing, and more. This was good in that we found ourselves able to get involved in all sorts of interesting things, but was also a problem as the brand of The Lacuna Works was becoming diluted and confused.

To rectify this, we restructured, and in 2015 our commercial activities were moved off into other brands. The Lacuna Works became the name that we used solely for our creative collaboration activities, in any field. This was not as much of a change as it might sound, as that was the way we had been operating in practice for a while, but this was when we formalised the decision.

So welcome to The Lacuna Works in its current form, a place where art happens and collaboration is born.

What's in a name?

Many people have asked us about the name and where it came from. "What is a Lacuna?" "Is that something to do with lakes?"

The name originated when we were looking at acquiring a studio space. 'Lacuna' means - among other things - a space, an opening, a void between objects that can be filled with whatever you want. It seemed like an ideal name for a studio, so we started to play with that as an idea.

The name "The Lacuna Works" soon came up as the dual meaning of 'Works' (as in 'it works' or as in a place where things are made) worked well. It was an empty space where ideas can form, the void to be filled with art and creativity.

We never did end up buying the studio as there were a number of legal and technical reasons that we thought it was not the right time to do that, but the name stuck.

The Lacuna Works - a space for creativity and ideas to form.

The Timeline of The Lacuna Works

2006 - Ben Slythe and Graham Guy collaborate on their first joint venture, a short film called "Dream".

2007 - After a few more short films and film challenges, Ben and Graham take a short called "Loyalty" to the Cannes Short Film Corner. During this trip, they decide to make a feature film.

2008 - "Underwood" is filmed using the invision multimedia ltd banner, and released on CD in 2009.

2009 - Plans were made to start a studio in a local warehouse, and although this was later abandoned, the name "The Lacuna Works" was born and was here to stay.

2010 - The Lacuna Works (TLW) began production on its first film ("The Cobra Lily"), and also started running networking events for film and TV people in London. These were very successful and the name became extremely well known. Other creative projects were added to the portfolio, and TLW started to grow.

2012 - TLW started production on its third film ("Isabelle"). By this point we were beginning to move into book publication, photography, networking events, and supporting various local heritage projects. The brand was starting to become diluted.

2013 - The First Faversham Film Festival (3F1) was held, supported by TLW, and more books were published. Production continued on various film projects. It was around about this time that we decided to temporarily stop holding the networking events as they were starting to get away from us. They were still successful, but without a clear direction of where TLW was going, we were not getting the benefit from them that we had in the beginning.

2014 - TLW held its first literary festival, TLW LEXiCON. This was the point where we realised that the purpose of The Lacuna Works had come full circle. No longer was it the film production company that it had rapidly evolved into at the start but it was a broad-based artistic collaboration and development project.

2015 - All publication and sales work was moved out of TLW and into the newly formed Yellow Plank. Commercial film production and photographic activities were moved back into inVision multimedia ltd, and The Lacuna Works became a creative collaboration once again.

We are currently investigating options around turning TLW into a charity so we can raise money to support even more external projects.
